2020 Mayhem Team Captain Application

This season we are changing the way we select our team captains.  As stated in the player handbook “team captains do not have to be the “best” players on the field; however, they must show leadership and should have the following five traits:

1. Captains must lead by example at all the times. She must have consistency in the way she
carries herself in the locker room, on the field, in the community and in her daily life. Whether
she likes it or not, she sets the standard for her teammates and influences their behavior in all
these environments. A great leader understands the power of her influence and always uses it
with good intentions.

2. Captains must be willing to sacrifice personal objectives for the good of the team. She must
understand that what is best for a team doesn’t always glorify or highlight its leaders. There will
be times when she will need to take a backseat and let one of her teammates shine for the team
to be successful. Ego and pride can poison a team, especially when it is coming from the top.

3. Captains must be competitive and confident, but not arrogant … there is a difference.
Creating a highly competitive environment for her team is the captains’ responsibility, and
without it, a team won’t be successful. Working extremely hard every day and taking the time to
properly prepare for opponents will breed confidence and repel complacency in the locker
room. Arrogance is a cover up for being insecure and unprepared. Arrogant people or teams
usually do a lot of talking with no action or positive results attached.

4. Captains must treat everyone with respect no matter their role. It is vital that she make sure
everyone is treated with the same level of respect and that they feel valued as teammates. As a
team captain, it’s her job to make sure everyone truly feels appreciated. She can’t expect
someone to give 100 percent if she feels like an outsider, and no team can reach its full potential
without everyone giving 100 percent.

5. Captains must be a person of her word. When she commits to doing something for her team
or a teammate, she must always follow through. She must be careful not to be a “rah rah”
person who makes a lot of promises and commitments because it sounds like the right thing to
say but doesn’t always deliver. Following through is how she truly gains the trust of her

Players wishing to serve as a Captain must complete the team’s Captain Application form below and agree to abide by the terms and conditions. Three Captains will be elected by the other players during the preseason. A fourth Captain will be selected by a vote of all the coaches. (The Coaches may opt to have all four Captains elected by the other players.) The players receiving the next highest number of votes will be given the opportunity to take on the role. Selection of Captains should be based on leadership demonstrated during the preseason taking into consideration the 5 characteristics noted above.
